Abstract
This research investigates numerically and experimentally the characteristics of axial unbalanced magnetic force (UMF) due to axial asymmetry of magnetic design in the spindle motor of a hard disk drive, and its effect on the acoustic noise and vibration. It shows that the least common multiple (LCM) harmonic of pole and slot of the acoustic noise and vibration are originated from axial UMF. It also shows experimentally that the axially balanced magnetic design can minimize the LCM harmonics in acoustic noise and vibration.
