Abstract
Travels is considered as not only a product of the representation of target area but also a ground in which constitutes oneself appropriating it. This article makes an approach, with a way of individual constituting a physical space into the Western as an conceptual representation in travels in the Western area and a way of time involving in the process of appropriating space, to the process of constructing self-image which functions as placed the Western as a converse authority by a metaphor for museum and laboratory. Travels, examined by a metaphor for museum, show the frame of temporal-spatial appropriation of the equality, 'an arrangement in relics exhibit in museums = a movement of the visiter = developmental time of the Western.' This 'Museum = the Western' representation has a significant implication of the ideology, 'the Western as the whole as well as the one' in the spatial aspect and historical sense of time in the modern period in the temporal aspect. Throughout the conception of 'a story' attached with national monuments and of 'development in world history' organizing and arranging museum exibitions, this arranges the inner Europe, according to the degree of temporal development to represent the self-image(nation) as 'a waiting room of history,' and 'not yet.' On the other hand, travels, examined by metaphor for laboratory, feature a political imagination, fancying absent nations and not-coming-yet future. Though the separation of time(the present focused) and of space(separation from nations, not the Western as a whole), this shows a viewpoint of each nation, not the world history when appropriating the Western. As a representation, based on the unique perception of time of the modern period, this shows active, political imagination that each nation requires prestige as a laboratory having a timetable of itself, with the 'seperation' in appropriating the Western.
