디지털 도시교향곡과 다성적 몽타주: 크라우드소스 다큐멘터리 ˂고진감래˃

Abstract

본 연구는 서울시가 글로벌 및 로컬 시민을 대상으로 공모한 시민 제작 영상을 박찬욱, 박찬경 형제(PARKing CHANce)가 선별하고 편집해 유튜브에 공개한 다큐멘터리 ˂고진감래˃를 도시교향곡의 관점에서 논의하고 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 도시교향곡은 도시의 일상과 사건에 대한 인상을 기록하면서 도시적 현대성의 물질적, 문화적, 인류학적, 지리적 차원을 성찰하는 작품을 말하며, 1920년대 이후 다큐멘터리와 아방가르드 영화 양식의 상호교차를 추구한 감독들(카발칸티, 루트만, 베르토프, 이벤스 등)에 의해 발달해 왔다. 온라인 집단지성에 근거한 사용자의 콘텐츠 참여를 이용한 크라우드소스 다큐멘터리는 웹 2.0이 영화 매체의 민주화와 참여 미디어적 실천을 촉진하는 가능성을 열어놓지만, 전통적인 다큐멘터리 영화의 제작, 미학, 작가성, 관객성에 다양한 질문을 제기한다. 본 논문은 ˂고진감래˃를 아마추어와 전문가, 개인적인 것과 집단적인 것, 온라인과 오프라인의 대립 등 이러한 전통적 이항대립을 넘어서는 크라우드소스 기반의 21세기 디지털 도시교향곡’으로 규정하고 이 영화가 도시교향곡 장르의 고전들을 계승하고 갱신하는 방식, 참여 영상 문화의 가능성과 한계 모두를 드러내는 방식을 고찰하고자 한다. This paper examines Bittersweet Seoul(2014), a crowdsourced project in which global and local citizens were invited by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to submit videos which were selected and edited by PARKing CHANce, in light of city symphony. Defined as a mode of film practice that reflects on the material, cultural, anthropological, and geographical aspects of urban modernity, the city symphony was developed in the 1920s by Dziga Vertov, Walter Ruttmann, and Joris Ivens who pursued intersections of documentary and avant-garde filmmaking. Crowdsourced documentary, a mode of documentary practice that utilizes user-generated content based on the collective intelligence of cyberspace, opens up Web 2.0’s utopian possibilities for participatory media culture, while also questioning traditional documentary’s ideas of production, aesthetics, authorship, and spectatorship. This paper characterizes Bittersweet Seoul as a 21st-century city symphony film based on crowdsourced filmmaking, investigating the ways in which it inherits and renews canonical city symphony films.
