톰 브라운 패션디자인에 나타난 풍자적 표현

Abstract

우리의 삶 속에서 자연스럽게 자리 잡아 온 풍자는 하나의 표현으로서 현대 사회에서 공감을 형성하기 위한 통로로서 발전되어 다양한 현대 사상의 흐름으 로 이어져 내려왔다. 풍자는 한정되지 않은 무한한 방법으로 다양한 예술에서 스며들어 소리 없는 아우성으로서 수많은 사조들과 함께 표출되어왔다. 인간은 과거로부터 현대까지 이어져온 현실과 이상에 있어 양면적인 모습들에 대한 불 협화음을 극복하기 위해 직접적이고 때론 은유적인 방법으로, 다채로운 시각으 로 여러 요소들을 뒤섞어 풍자적 표현들을 긍정적인 방향으로 풍성하게 만든다. 이러한 풍자에 대한 연구는 문학, 회화, 조형, 건축 등 다양한 예술 분야에서 진행되었지만, 패션 분야에서는 풍자와 관련되어진 연구의 진행이 미비하다. 톰 브라운은 컬렉션을 통해 다양한 방법으로 사회적인 현상을 표현하며 풍자적 표 현들을 나타내고 있다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 폭넓은 예술에서 나타나는 풍자 적 표현들을 패션으로 확대하여 톰 브라운의 패션 컬렉션을 통하여 현대의 패 션에서 나타난 풍자적 표현을 분석하고 제시하여 패션 디자인으로 다양한 방향 성을 확대하는데 있다. 연구 방법으로 풍자와 관련된 국내외의 학술논문, 학위논문과 선행연구, 단행 본 등, 풍자적 개념과 관련된 이론적 고찰을 진행하고 현대 사조에서 나타나는 다양한 예술에서 나타나는 문학, 회화, 조형, 건축, 패션에서의 풍자적 표현이 적용되어진 사례를 분석하여 각 분야에 나타나는 풍자적 표현들을 분류하고 종 합적으로 정리하여 분석의 틀을 마련하였다. 이를 바탕으로 톰 브라운 관련 선 행연구와 컬렉션 리뷰, 톰 브라운의 인터뷰 자료들을 바탕으로 톰 브라운에 나 타난 풍자적 표현을 분석하였다. 연구의 분석을 위한 사진 자료는 전문 패션 매거진 ‘보그 코리아’와 ‘US Vogue.com’을 통해 수집하고 컬렉션의 리뷰와 인터뷰 기사, 전문 서적과 인터 넷 사진 자료를 활용하여 분석하였다. 연구의 범위는 국내외 패션 전문매거진 ‘Vogue’에 공식적으로 기록되어 있는 톰 브라운의 2006 S/S 컬렉션을 기준으로 2021 S/S까지 16년간 진행해온 톰 브라운의 컬렉션 Ready To Wear, Resort, Menswear, Pre Fall 컬렉션을 모두 대상으로 64개의 컬렉션에서 총 2,392의 사진 자료를 수집하였다. 자료의 분석은 톰 브라운의 컬렉션에서 풍자 적 표현이 시각적으로 나타난 디자인의 사례를 기준으로 하여 분석을 진행하였 다, 수집 자료 2392개 중 풍자적 표현이 나타난 사례는 총 1,753개(73.3%)로 자료를 분석의 대상으로 활용하였다. 다양한 예술분야에서 보여 지는 풍자적 표현의 선행연구 및 이론적 고찰에서 나타난 풍자적 표현의 기준의 틀을 바탕으로 분석된 톰 브라운 패션 컬렉션에 서 나타난 풍자적 표현 특성은 젠더플루이드의 유동적 재구성(26.4%), 은유적 알레고리의 이중적 의미(15.4%), 시각적 위트의 유희적 표현(12.0%), 해체된 소 재의 중첩으로의 구축(9.9%), 형태적 왜곡의 차용(9.5%)의 순서로 나타났으며, 분석된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 젠더플루이드의 유동적 재구성은 한쪽으로 고정되어 있지 않으면서 시 간이 지남에 따라서 변화하게 되는 성 정체성을 갖거나 보여주는 것으로 패션 에서는 젠더의 유동적인 의복으로 표현된다. 톰 브라운의 패션 컬렉션에서는 고 정되어 있던 복식의 고정관념들에 대한 여성복 및 남성복이라는 개념을 유동적 으로 재구성하여 양성성을 표현하고 성별의 구분이 없는 의상을 디자인하여 표 현하거나 때로는 성적인 특징을 강조하는 방식으로서 성별의 구분에 대한 기준 을 재구성하여 오랫동안 지켜온 성에 대한 규범들을 유동적으로 재구성하여 성 에 대한 풍자적 표현으로 나타났다. 둘째, 은유적 알레고리의 이중적 의미로 나타나는 패션에서의 풍자는 은유적 인 방법으로서 다른 것을 통해 이야기하는 뜻을 가진 알레고리의 모습이다. 동 물, 식물과 사물을 통하여 그 형태가 사람의 모습과 행동들을 표현해내는 것처 럼 인간의 모습들을 의인화 하여 은유적인 모습으로서 풍자적 표현이 전개된다. 패션에서의 연출들을 더하여 이중적인 의미로서 해석이 가능하도록 풍자적 표 현들을 더해 디자인을 형상화 하였다. 셋째, 시각적 위트의 유희적인 표현은 시각으로서 제시되어지는 형태들에 의하여 선택되어지는 시각적인 표상에 전혀 다른 상황이나 의미들을 결합시키는 재치로서 바라보는 시각적 형태에 대한 착시를 주고 재치 있고 능란하게 구사 하는 위트와 함께 보고 있는 것에 대한 유희를 전달해준다. 이는 기존에 의복이 가지고 있던 형태에 대한 특징을 과장하거나 그려내는 방식으로서 표현 된다. 톰 브라운은 시지각적으로 바라보는 대상에 대한 풍자적 표현 방식으로 위트 있고 유머러스하게 풍자적 표현을 전달한다. 시각적인 눈속임과 패러디로서 나 타나는 풍자는 착시를 더해 유희적인 표현들로 풍자의 양면적인 모습들을 녹여 낸다. 넷째, 해체된 소재의 중첩으로의 구축은, 형태의 재구축을 만들어내는 방식이 다. 기존 의복의 개념을 뒤바꿔 상의가 하의에 가거나 겉과 속이 바뀌는 모습으 로 내부에 위치한 옷이 외부에 위치하는 형태로, 톰 브라운 컬렉션에서는 다른 소재들을 중첩하여 본래 존재하던 의복의 개념의 해체함으로서 의복을 재구축 하는 방식으로 표현되었다. 이처럼 해체를 통해 자유롭게 보여 지는 구성들은 계 층에 대한 풍자 형태를 닮아있으며 위치 전환으로 풍자적인 표현이 나타난다. 다섯째, 형태적 왜곡의 차용은 풍자가 가진 희극적인 성격을 유머로서 왜곡하 고 변형하여 의도적이고 때로는 비의도적인 표현으로서 나타난다. 차용하고 과 장하며, 변형된 형태로 전개되는 디자인은 본래 존재하던 정형화에 대한 고정성 에 풍자와 함께 유머러스하게 전개된다. 톰 브라운의 컬렉션에는 풍자의 표현에 서 보여 지는 과장으로서의 표현과 변형과 왜곡을 통한 표현으로 본래 가지고 있는 고정 관념들에 대한 풍자적 표현들이 녹아있다. 이와 같이 현대 사상의 흐름에서 나타나는 사회적인 측면 또는 대상으로서 풍 자의 접근은 유머러스하게 웃음을 주면서 그러한 웃음 속에서도 개선되기를 바 라는 긍정적인 형태의 모습들로 표현되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 톰 브라운 패션 컬렉션에서 나타난 풍자적 표현을 분석함으로써 문학, 회화, 조형, 건축 등에 집중되어있던 풍자의 개념들을 패션으로 확대하여 긍정적인 형태로 풍자가 패 션에서의 새로운 방향성으로 확대되어 지속적인 연구가 되기를 기대한다.; To overcome the dissonance of ambiguity that exists between reality and ideals from the past until now, humans have made satirical expressions richer in positive directions by mixing various elements with colorful perspectives using methods that are direct and sometimes metaphorical. Research on such satire has been progressed in various art fields such as literature, painting, sculpture, and architecture and not much research has been progressed in relation to satire in the field of fashion. Thom Browne displays satirical expressions while expressing social phenomena in a variety of ways through his collections. At this, the purpose of this study is to expand satirical expressions that appear in a wide range of arts into fashion, analyze and present satirical expressions that appear in modern fashion through the fashion collections of Thom Browne, and expand diverse directions into fashion design. For research methods, theoretical examinations related to satirical concepts were made of domestic and foreign academic theses, dissertations, previous studies, and publications related to satire, analysis was conducted on cases in which satirical expressions were applied in literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, and fashion, and satirical expressions that appear in each field were categorized, synthetically organized, and a frame of analysis was prepared. Based on this, analysis was conducted on satirical expressions that appear in Thom Browne based on previous studies conducted on Thom Browne along with collection reviews and interview material. Photo material for analysis was collected through the professional fashion magazines of ‘Vogue Korea’ and ‘US Vogue.com’ and analysis was conducted using collection reviews, interview articles, professional books, and internet photo material. The research scope includes 16years of Thom Browne collections officially recorded in the international fashion magazine ‘Vogue’, ranging from the 2006 S/S collection to the 2021 S/S with 64 collections including Ready to Wear, Resort, Menswear, and Pre-Fall collections and among them, a total of 2,392 photos were collected as data. Of the collected data, there were a total of 1,753 (73.3%) cases displaying satirical expressions and this data was used for analysis. Characteristics of satirical expression in the fashion collections of Thom Browne appeared in the order of fluid reconstruction of genderfluid (26.4%), the dual meanings of metaphorical allegories (15.4%), playful expressions of visual wit (12.0%), constructions made of overlapped disassembled material (9.9%), and the borrowing of morphological distortion (9.5%) and the analyzed results were as follows. First, the fluid reconstruction of genderfluid has or displays gender identity that is not fixed to one side but that changes following the passage of time and in fashion, it is expressed as clothing with gender fluidity. The fashion collections of Thom Browne fluidly reconstruct the concepts of women's and men's clothing, breaking down fixed stereotypes and designing and expressing clothing without gender distinctions or sometimes restructuring standards of gender distinctions that emphasize gender characteristics, fluidly recomposing norms regarding gender that have been preserved for a long period of time, and presenting satirical expressions of gender. Second, satire in fashion that appears as dual meanings of metaphorical allegories are allegories that speak through other things using metaphorical methods. As forms express images of people and their behaviors through animals, plants, or objects, the images of people are personified and satirical expressions are developed. Direction is added to fashion collections, allowing interpretations to be made with dual meanings, and satirical expressions are added to embody designs. Third, playful expressions of visual wit provide optical illusions of visual forms that make observations as wit that combines visual representations that are selected by forms presented visually with completely different situations or meanings. This is expressed using methods that exaggerate or draw characteristics of forms possessed by existing clothing forms. Thom Browne displays satirical expressions with wit and humor using satirical expression methods of objects observed through visual perception. Fourth, the construction of overlapped disassembled material is a method that creates the reconstruction of form. Concepts of existing clothing positions are changed with upper garments being used as lower garments or clothes being worn as if inside out with inner garments being worn on the outside and expressions are made by reconstructing clothing by overlapping different material and disassembling clothing concepts that have previously existed. Like this, compositions that are displayed freely through disassembly resemble satirical forms of classes and satirical expressions appear as transitions of location. Fifth, the borrowing of morphological distortion distorts and varies the comical characteristics of satire, displaying them as intentional and occasionally unintentional expressions. Designs developed as exaggerated and varied forms are developed humorously along with satire upon the fixability of standardization that has essentially existed.
