Abstract
This study investigate the optimum manufacturing conditions of an activated carbon from ligneous wastes which were generated from food processing. Jujube seeds and wallnut shells were selected as raw materials. Carbonization and steam activation were performed in a fixed-bed laboratory electric furnace. The optimum conditions drived for making activated carbons were 2-hour carbonization at 700℃ followed by 1-hour activation at 1,000℃ for the jujube seeds, and 1-hour carbonization at 700℃ followed by 0.5-hour activation at 1,000℃ for the walnut shells, respectively. The surface area and iodine number of jujube-seed activated carbon were 1,477㎡/g and 1,450㎎/g, respectively. Those values of the walnut-sell activated carbon were 1,184㎡/g and 1,200㎎/g, respectively. A pore-distribution analysis revealed that the most pores were developed around a pore diameter of 40Å, like the commercial ones. Obtained activated carbons from the jujube seeds and walnut shells had about 2 times and 0.4 times larger adsorption capacity for ABS, respectively, than the commercial ones.
