메시앙과 프랑스 음악

Abstract

올리비에 메시앙은 그의 가톨릭 신앙, 새소리의 사용, 혁신적인 리듬과 선법의 사용 때문에 매우 독창적인 작곡가로 여겨지거나, 혹은 종종 그의 유명한 작품 <음가와 강세를 위한 모드>(1949) 때문에 신 비엔나 악파의 계보를 잇는 작곡가로 여겨진다. 그러나 메시앙의 음악은 순수하게 그의 독창적인 아이디어로부터 나온 것이 아니고, 또한 독일의 음렬음악을 이어 받은 것도 아니다. 그의 음악어법은 프랑스 선배 작곡가들의 아이디어와 영향을 토대로 만들어진 것이다. 본 논문에서는 프랑스의 음악적 사고를 리듬에 대한 관심, 새로운 음향의 추구, 종교적이고 신화적인 영향, 독일 음악에 대한 반발의 네 가지로 분류하였다. 이 논문의 첫 장에서는 이러한 네 가지 측면에서 프랑스 음악전통을 살펴보았고, 둘째 장에서는 메시앙 음악어법을 이 네 가지에 대응시켜 면밀히 검토하였다. 독자적으로 보이기만 하는 메시앙의 음악어법은 20세기 음악에서 그를 두드러지게 만들었지만, 많은 경우 그의 음악어법은 프랑스 선배 작곡가들의 아이디어와 전통을 이어받은 것이다. 메시앙은 독창적인 프랑스 음악을 계승, 발전시켰으며, 그 뿌리 위에서 개성 있는 자신의 음악어법을 확립시켰다.; Olivier Messiaen(1908-1992) is considered as so original composer because of his catholic faith, use of birdsong and innovation of rhythm and modes, or as a composer who succeeded Second Viennese School‘s serial music because of his famous work, Mode de valeurs et d'intensites(1949) for piano. However Messiaen's music is neither composed of his own idea, nor succeeded German serial music. His musical language is based on earlier french composer's idea and their influence. For example, his Mode de valeurs et d'intensites known as the heritage of the serial music is not total serialism which adheres the principle of serial music, but just provides the idea could arise the total serialism and is composed based on the French musical thinking. The thesis classifies the French musical thinking into four aspects: (1) interest of rhythm, (2) pursuit of new sounds, (3) religious and mythical influences, (4) reactions against German music. In the first chapter, French musical tradition with these four categories were examined, and in the second, the paralleled Messiaen's musical language to them were analyzed. Despite Messiaen's musical language is generally perceived original, his musical language succeeds older French composer's ideas and tradition. Messiaen upheld and expanded the French musical thinking and established his characteristic musical language based upon it.
