고대 그리스 비극의 코러스와 그 현대적 활용에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 고대 그리스 비극에서의 코러스가 현대의 공연에서 어떻게 활용되는가를 살펴보는 것이다. 이러한 목적을 위해 2005년 예술의 전당에서 공연된 미하엘 마르마리노스 연출의 《아가멤논-유령소나타》에서 나타난 코러스의 공연양식적 특성을 연구하였다. 고대 그리스 비극에서 코러스는 배우이면서 관객이고, 참여자이면서 비평자인 이중적 정체성을 지닌다. 또한, 노래와 춤을 활용한 연기, 가면의 활용 등 연극적 표현형식에서도 독특한 특성을 지니고 있다. 이러한 특성으로 때문에 코러스는 현대연극에서 다시 부각되었다. 20세기 아방가르드 연극이 대두하면서 사실주의 중심의 현대 연극이 직면한 위기를 극복하기 위해 연극의 원형에 대한 관심이 고조되었고, 이와 함께 고대 그리스 연극과 코러스에 대해 관심이 집중되었던 것이다. 마르마리노스 연출의 《아가멤논-유령소나타》는 코러스의 현대적 활용양상의 좋은 예이다. 이 공연은 극 전반에 걸쳐 코러스를 부각시킴으로써 과거 그리스비극의 본질을 계승하면서도 현대성과 현장성을 확보함으로써 고대 그리스 비극의 현대적 활용 가능성을 확장시켰다고 평가할 수 있다. 이 공연은 코러스의 활용이 오늘날에도 여전히 유효한 연극적 형식임을 보여준다는 점에서 중요하다.; The purpose of this study is to find out how the chorus in the ancient greek tragic dramas is being used in modern performance. To achieve the purpose, I examined the performance characteristics displayed in the 《Agamemnon-Ghost Sonata》directed by Michael Marmarinos from greek and performed at the Seoul Arts Center in 2005. The chorus in Greek tragic dramas has dual identities since it has characteristics of both the actor and the audience while being the participant and the critic of the drama. Moreover, it has unique and expressional theatrical characteristics such as acting by using songs and dances, and wearing the masks. Due to the characteristics the chorus possesses, it has been brought into light again in the modern dramas. As avant-garde theatre had risen in the 20th century, the interests in the archetypes of the dramas were heightened in order to overcome the crisis that realism-focused modern dramas had been facing at the time, which led to heightened interests in the Greek dramas and chorus. 《Agamemnon-Ghost Sonata》directed by Michael Marmarinos is a good example of the application of the chorus in the modern dramas. The performance is appreciated to be succeeding to the qualities of Greek dramas of the past by constantly bringing the chorus into relief during the whole performance, while successfully expanding the modern application range of the Greek tragic dramas by achieving the modern and scenic characteristics. 《Agamemnon-Ghost Sonata》is important in a sense that it proves application of the chorus is still an effective theatrical method in modern dramas as well.
