Abstract
New N-substituted acrylamide monomer (DPAA) was synthesized by reacting acryloyl chloride and 4-dodecylaniline and its single crystal was observed to be a monoclinic structure by mean of XRD. Homopolymer with long alkyl chain was prepared by RAFT polymerization of a crystalline monomer, 4-dodecylphenyl-N-acrylamide (DPAA). The resulting homopoly (DPAA) had low polydispersity, Mw/Mn < 1.3. Thermal investigation confirmed that the homopolymer has crystalline morphology. New di- and triblock copolymers with different ratios of the block containing poly(DPAA) as a hard segment and poly(n-butyl acrylate) as a soft one were successfully prepared using RAFT polymerization. The block copolymerization proceeded with controlled/living characteristics. The morphologies of thin films of the block copolymers cast from different solvents were examined by atomic force microscopy using different casting procedures. The observed morphologies were closely related to not only the composition of the crystalline segment in the block copolymers, but also the sample preparation conditions. This suggests that the crystalline block plays an important role in the morphological formation of the thin films.
