- Abstract
The steady-state and isothermal mathematical modeling of polymer electrolyte fuel cells was conducted based on the two-phase water transport using a computational fluid dynamics technique. Unlike previous researches, the presented model focuses on the water management that maintains a hydration of polymer membrane and controls flooding in a cathode electrode. With the presented model, a key transport and electrochemical phenomena inside the proton exchange membrane and catalyst layers were investigated to understand the reasons for the local distribution of each phenomenon. The results from the analysis show that the inlet humidification and membrane thickness are crucial parameters for water transport inside a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, which affects the cell performance, severely. This transport phenomenon through a polymer electrolyte membrane governs the local distribution of water content and current density.
