Leonard Bernstein과 I Hate Music에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 지휘자이자 작곡가이며 뛰어난 음악해설자이자 피아니스트였던 레너드 번스타인(Leonard Bernstein, 1918-1990)과 그의 작품 I Hate Music 에 관한 논문이다. ‘연기도 하고 춤도 추고 노래도 부르는’ 할리우드의 스타처럼 번스타인은 TV에서 청중들을 상대로 연주와 강의를 했고 때로는 브로드웨이 뮤지컬을 만들었다. 그 결과 할리우드의 스타 못지않은 대중의 스타로서 클래식음악을 전파하는데 탁월한 공적을 세웠다. 또한 번스타인은 재즈와 팝 등 미국의 대중음악에 대해서도 적극적으로 포용하여 종교음악이나 성악작품, 혹은 발라드작품에까지 사용하였다. 현대음악의 연주와 보급에 남다른 관심을 기울였던 번스타인의 다양한 음악활동은 지휘, 강연, 저술, 작곡 등으로 볼 수 있다. 또한 그는 아놀드 쇤베르크, 안톤 베베른, 알반 베르크 등이 사용하였던 음열음악에 대해서 약간의 관심은 있었고 크로스 리듬과 블루노트를 사용하였다. 번스타인이 작사ㆍ작곡을 한 I Hate Music은 5개로 된 연가곡 작품이다. 유대교의 영향을 받은 다른 작품들과는 달리 이 곡은 가볍고 활달한 분위기의 곡으로 마치 어린 아이가 상상을 하면서 마음이 가는대로 노래를 부르는 것과 같은 분위기와 가사를 보여준다. 이러한 이유로 번스타인의 다른 가곡들과는 다르다고 느껴졌고 이곡을 통하여 번스타인이 작곡가로서의 성공적인 데뷔를 하게 되어 대중적인 인기를 얻게 해준 음악적 가치가 뛰어난 작품이기에 이 작품을 선택하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 미국 가곡의 흐름과 번스타인의 생애 그리고 그가 작곡했던 작품들을 먼저 살펴보았고, I Hate Music의 특징과 작품 분석을 연구하였다. 세부적으로는 부분적 악보 예시를 통한 작품의 분석과 가사의 내용에 따른 악상 변화, 프레이징등 이 작품을 연주할 때 필요한 표현방법을 연구하였고 결론에서는 본론에서 분석 연구한 것을 토대로 각 곡의 내용을 요약 정리해 보았다.; Leonard Bernstein(1918-1990) was one of the leading American composers of the 20th century, as well as a pianist and a conductor who showed characteristics both of classical and popular music firmly based on academic backgrounds. Furthermore, he was a renowned author, a music educator and a speaker with interest in various fields. To the general public, Bernstein was mostly known as the conductor of New York Philharmonic, but he also showed a great talent in composition. Bernstein's works are highly estimated in the fields of musicals and Music Theater. West Side Story, one of his best-known works was performed many times in Korea and is considered as a masterpiece by the public. His music was influenced by several composers such as Gustav Mahler, Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Dimitri Shostakovich, Aaron Copland, and George Gershwin. In this treatise, I have studied his song cycle I Hate Music to observe his musical language in his vocal output. The importance of I Hate Music lies on the fact that it marks his debut as a composer. After the successful premiere, where he accompanied mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel, his works began to receive full recognition throughout the world. This song cycle, with a subtitle 'A Cycle of Five Kid Song for Soprano and Piano', contains fairy tale, wit, and reflects his critical philosophy about society. My research centers around his life and emphasis on his musical language. And thru the analysis of the piece, I showed the original version of the texts and explained the structural organization of each song. And I pointed out the most important aspects of each song. The first song, "My Name is Barbara", reveals a mysterious atmosphere and plays in legato; the second song, "Jupiter has Seven Moons", represents pure heart of children and emphasizes the contrast between the two motifs-especially the difference of tempi; the third song, "I Hate Music", gives descriptive impressions of the noisy concert hall with arpeggios; the fourth song, "A Big Indian and A Little Indian", uses jazzy rhythms and theatrical elements; and the fifth song, "I'm a Person, too", depicts the determined mind of a child well demonstrated by the balance given to the vocal and piano parts. I Hate Music represents the innocence and pure heart of a child. And this work expresses the freedom, and individuality of a new musical language, and established a new genre of the music. My research on I Hate Music gave me an opportunity to observe Bernstein’s vocal works, and opened a new horizon on his musical language as well as his musical output.
