Abstract

The purpose of this study is to seek the way to develop Chang-geuk that has been deprived from our gorgeous cultural heritage and considered as the performance style of peculiar creativity, as the form of being loved by the majority of audience. The Chang-geuk, originated in the early 1900's, has been formed as the simple imitation or transformation of a new-school drama not having settled-idea as traditional drama of Korea; that is, Chang-geuk was initiated as a deformed performance style that has been applied and made up to western theater in the stream of civilization. Chang-geuk had the social significance and profound dramatic worth that could be newly developed although lots of problems had been revealed. Thus, Chang-geuk performers strived to do several things about the overcome of problems Chang-geuk had and settle-down of it as a creative performance. Especially, National Chang-geuk Troupe had certainty of directing independence and made the turning point. The director of Chang-geuk, Huh-kyu, a key person among them, tried to do something new for the settlement of identity and creative performance art in Chang-geuk. With their efforts, Chang-geuk came to be bifurcated-forms, traditional drama of secure settlement and new-formed music drama out of the Pansori. The patterns were different, but the crucial thing in them is to have the sense that Chang-geuk could build up the identity to make itself as the creative performance style of Korea. In addition, National Changuk Troupe has put their spurs on developing Chang-geuk with the policy to foster it as national brand worldwide. Furthermore, HanKookChangGeuk Troupe, a private group for Chang-geuk, tested a little theater movement and any other new experiments. Chang-geuk has been developed as National Chang-geuk Troupe lead others so far and Chang-geuk will be born again as performance art of traditional creativitysupposed that private groups, such as HanKookChangGeuk Troupe, continuously make every efforts with National Chang-geuk Troupe to develop Chang-geuk.
