Abstract
Extreme Engineering and construction is an emerging field which has high possibility of growth in future, could hold dominant position in the field of general construction technology through continuous investment. However, this study was limited but it showed that extreme engineering can become important business field for the nation through development of technologies for extreme environments which are of national interest. After the advancement in space exploration, many countries have decided to enter into the space exploration business. Therefore, Korea must decide to develop new technologies for extreme environment on earth and space so that economic, social and scienfic benefits can be drawn. In order to set the basis of research for national vision toward extreme engineering, two surveys were constructed in two conferences held in Korea in 2009. Although the survey results were not representing the national voice but this efforts were useful because it was first step toward development of extreme engineering plan for Korea. With further research, national vision for extreme engineering can be developed. The most of the respondent from construction industry, academia and experts of polar research institute were of the view that deep sea exploration should be first priority and space exploration at fourth number. NASA and SICSA are working on research projects which are aimed not only for space development but some of the technologies can be feasible for other extreme environment. In this study trend of extreme engineering in Korea and rest of the world has been focused and plan for the development of extreme engineering in Korea has been laid out. In this thesis it has been emphasized, Korea should focus on development of necessary technologies for exploration and exploitation of extreme environments.
