온라인 학습자의 영어 독해전략 사용 분석: 사이버대학생을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 온라인 학습자가 주로 사용하는 읽기전략을 조사하여 온라인 학습자들에 대한 이해를 높이고자 하였다. 또한 학습자 변인과 읽기전략 간의 차이에 대해 알아보고, 나아가 기존의 오프라인 학습자들과 온라인 학습자의 차이점을 논의하여 앞으로 읽기교육에 대한시사점을 찾아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 첫째, 온라인 학습자가 사용하는 읽기전략이 무엇인지 알아보고 둘째, 학습자의 성별, 나이, 학습 수준별에 따른 읽기전략 사용의 차이를 살펴보았다. 본 논문의 연구 문제를 해결하기 위해 온라인 학습의 특성을 모두 가지고 있는 사이버대학생을 대상으로 연구를 진행하였다. 서울 소재 사이버대학교 1~4학년 영어학부 학생255명을 대상으로 설문지를 통해 읽기전략에 관한 정보 및 개인정보를 수집하였다. 자료 처리는 SPSS/Window(12.0 version)를 이용하여 빈도분석, 기술통계량분석, T-검정, 분량분석을 실시 하였다. 모든 자료의 유의수준은 0.05를 기준으로 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학습자의 전반적인 읽기전략 사용 정도를 알아본 결과 학습자는 읽기전략 사용에 긍정적 반응을 보여 어느 정도 읽기전략을 인식하며 사용하고 있다고 분석 하였다. 또한, 읽기전략의 평균이 높은 상위 10가지의 문항을 통해 시각적 콘텐츠 중심의 수업방식에 적용하기 유용한 전략들을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 학습자는 5가지의 읽기전략 유형 중 정보탐색 전략을 가장 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났고 이어서 어휘이해 전략, 구조이해 전략, 상위인지 전략, 추측 및 이해점검 전략을 사용하는 것으로 조사되었다. 비슷한 결과의 선행연구를 통해 고등학생 때 사용하던 전략을 대학생이 되고 나서도 계속하여 인지하고 있는 것으로 추측해 볼 수 있었다. 둘째, 학습자의 성별, 연령, 학습수준과 읽기전략 유형별 사용 관계를 살펴보자면, 성별에 따른 읽기전략 사용은 여성이 남성보다 활발하게 읽기전략을 사용 한다는 선행연구와 같은 결과가 났다. 연령별 읽기전략 사용은 통계적으로 유의미한 값이 나타나지 않았으며, 이는 연령에 따라 사용하는 학습전략의 차이가 나타나지 않았다는 선행연구 결과와 같은 결과를 보여주었다. 학습수준에 따른 읽기전략 사용에서는 상위권, 하위권, 중위권 집단의 순으로 전략 사용이 활발하게 나타났고, 상위권 학습자가 전략 사용을 더 많이 한다는 선행 연구 결과와 같은 결론을 얻었다. 이와 같은 결과물은 온라인 학습자의 읽기전략 사용에 대한 이해를 돕는다. 또한, 온라인 학습자와 기존의 오프라인 학습자들의 읽기전략 차이를 인지하여 학습자의 상황에 맞게 읽기전략을 효율적으로 적용할 수 있도록 읽기 전략 교육이 필요하다는 것을 시사한다.; The purpose of this study is to investigate the reading strategies and strategy use in on-line learning environments. For the purpose, research questions have been set: 1) What types of English reading strategies are used by university students in the on-line learning environment?; 2) What is the difference between gender, age, proficiency level and Reading strategies? The subjects were 255 Cyber University students. Students’ reading strategies were examined using a modified questionnaire developed by Park(1999). In the statistical treatment of collected data, SPSS Statistics (version 12.0) was used and the results were analyzed by t-test, mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA and Two-way ANOVA. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; Firstly, the average point of the survey is 3.49. It indicates that almost all students generally used the English reading strategies. Secondly, by analyzing the frequency of using the reading strategies, it was found out that information-seeking strategies ware used most frequently, followed by vocabulary-comprehension strategies, understanding the structure of a sentence and a text, and metacognitive strategies in that order. Guessing and comprehension-checking strategies were used least frequently by cyber university students. Finally, according to the analysis of the relationship between three factors(gender, age, proficiency level) and reading strategies, the use of reading strategies was influenced by the gender and proficiency level. However, the age factor did not have an effect on reading strategies. This study is appropriate for investigating the reading strategies, but the limited number of participants makes it difficult to apply the findings to a larger population.
