Abstract
Biofilms are the terms used to describe the attachment of biological material to the surface. Biofouling is economically significant problem in the water service utilities, many industrial processes. The prevention of bacterial infection to the surfaces has been also recognized to be very important in biomedical and health industries. In this study, we suggest a microstructure fabrication for anti-biofouling of stainless steel. It was investigated the effect of microstructure formation and the increase of surface roughness to anti-biofouling in stainless steel (type 304 SS). The substrate was patterned by conventional UV photolithography. After that, electro chemical fabrication (ECF) and FeCl3 etching methods were used for the control of microstructure and surface roughness of stainless steel. And then, microorganism Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured on each of the microstructure for observing the tendency of anti-biofouling. As a result, it was observed that the decrease of the micro-organism attachment occurs by increasing the microstructure formed stainless steel compared to the conventional stainless steel. We expect that this work can be used for carious non-toxic anti-biofouling applications.
