충돌몽타주이론의 관점에서 본 효과적 시각커뮤니케이션 원리 -영화 <세븐> 오프닝 타이틀시퀀스 중심으로-

Abstract

영화 오프닝 타이틀 시퀀스가 단순히 제목과 배우를 소개하는 작업에 국한되는 것이 아니라, 관객에게 흥미와 긴장감을 유발시킴과 동시에 영화의 내용을 상징적, 함축적으로 보여주어야 하는 짧지만 중대한 프롤로그이다. 영화의 오프닝타이틀 시퀀스는 1950-1960년대 디자이너 솔바스(Saul Bass) 이후, 정보 전달기능을 넘어서 보다 적극적인 영상 커뮤니케이션으로 확장, 발전하고 있다. 1990년대 디자이너 카일 쿠퍼(Kyle Cooper)의 <세븐(Seven)>의 오프닝 타이틀 시퀀스는 독립적인 오프닝 타이틀 형식으로, 독창적인 영상디자인을 보여줌으로써 영화의 질을 한 단계 높이는 역할을 하였다.<세븐>의 오프닝 타이틀 시퀀스의 시각적 특징들은 세르게이 에이슈타인(Sergei Eisenstein)의 충돌몽타주에 바탕하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 에이젠슈타인의 충돌 몽타주이론이 <세븐>의 오프닝 타이틀 시퀀스 전체구조에서 어떻게 작용하고 있는지, 그 시각적 특징들은 고찰하려는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. <세븐>의 오프닝타이틀 시퀀스에 적용된 충돌몽타주는 ‘시각적 충돌’이라는 시각적 개념에서부터 구체화 될 수 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 몽타주의 충돌원리는 오프닝 타이틀 시퀀스의 개별 쇼트에서 전달되는 본질적인 이미지의 의미 외에 비주얼과의 충돌을 통해 수용자 각자의 사고 과정을 통해 더욱 정교하게 강화되는 메시지로의 창조적 비약의 가능성을 제공하고 있다.

Opening title sequence in the movie is a short but important prologue as it gives audience curiosity and suspense while showing the movie in a symbolic and implicative way. The opening title sequence in the movie has developed into more positive video communications beyond the mere role of conveying information since Saul Bass, a designer in the 1950’s and 60’s. After the slump of 70’s and 80’s in the opening title sequence industry, Kyle Cooper is recognized as one of the leading designers who opened a new chapter in the opening title sequence. His credit results from his designing the opening title sequence for the movie Se7en. Se7en’s opening title sequence shows creative video designs as a type of independent opening title. Se7en’s unique visual expression is based on the collision montage theory of Sergei M. Eisenstein. This study examines creative visual principles that are shown in the se7en and studies what kinds of effects have when collision montage theory is applied to Se7en’s opening title sequence.
