- Dye-sensitized solar cells based on nanocrystalline TiO2 have been fabricated with an N719, ruthenium sensitizer [RuL2(NCS)2 : 2 TBA (L = 2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid; TBA = tetrabutylammonium)] and three coadsorbents, two silane derivatives, TEOS and SSUII, and the equimolar composite. The cell treated with SSUII showed an increase in both Jsc and the power conversion efficiency, improved by 30% (9.4 → 12.2 mA / cm-2) and 27% (4.4 → 5.6 %), even without negligible decrease in Voc decreased by 4% (747 → 717 mV) compared to devices without SSUII passivation in 1 sun illumination at AM 1.5 (100 mW/cm2). The performance of devices was evaluated on the basis of their J-V characteristics, dark current measurements, intensity-modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS), intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMVS) and open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD). The result is attributed to that SSUII increases the photoexcited electron lifetime and reduces the rate of back electron recombination from conduction band electron to redox couple at the interface between TiO2 and electrolyte.
