Abstract
The new photo-alignment materials using azobenzene and chalcone were synthesized in order to improve the alignment properties of liquid crystals on the layer surface. In addition, The monomer was synthesized depending on the difference of the alkyl chain length and was copolymerized according to ratio of methyl methacrylate. The polymer in the film state were irradiated with linearly polarized UV (LPUV) light. The micrographs demonstrated anisotropic changes in the alignment films, with a maximum at low exposure energy (26.5 mJ/cm2). Liquid crystal molecules was easily aligned perpendicular to the electric vector of the incident LPUV light. The azimuthal anchoring energy of liquid crystal ML-0643 increased with exposure energy. The pretilt angles are estimated to be 0.5° for short alkyl groups and 89° for long alkyl groups. Additionally, all materials containing less than 50 mol% of MMA have provided a homogeneous alignment and only PA6CH6 with more than 50 mol% of MMA showed a homeotropic alignment
