Abstract
Low intakes of calcium and inadequate vitamin D status are reported to associate with higher prevalence rates of obesity. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of whey calcium and vitamin D intake on lipid metabolism in growing rats. Total fifty six 5-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided in to 7 groups and fed for 6 weeks. Calcium groups divided into three groups, low, normal and high(0.25% Ca, 0.5% Ca, 1% Ca). Vitamin D subgroups in low and high calcium groups divided into three levels, low, normal and high.(10IU VD, 1000IU VD, 5000IU VD) The effects of calcium and vitamin D on each group were evaluated by two way ANOVA. The amount of abdominal fat, visceral fat, and epididymal fat in the Low-Ca groups were significantly higher than Normal-Ca and High-Ca groups. Serum leptin level of Low-Ca groups was higher than Normal-Ca and High-Ca groups. The serum parathyroid hormone concentration was the highest in low Ca·low vitamin D group. Serum Ca concentration was not affected by dietary Ca levels or vitamin D intake among seven groups. But the levels of serum 25(OH)D3 were significantly increased with increasing dietary vitamin D levels. The serum levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol in the low Ca groups were significantly higher than those of the normal Ca and high Ca groups. These results indicate that low calcium intake increased serum lipid level and body fat amount.
