Abstract
When scouring occurs in front of a structure, it may cause seaward tilt and settlement of the structure, which leads to instability and loss of function. Considering the complexity of the interaction between the fluid and structure, in addition to the cost of laboratory experiments, numerical analysis is the preferred method for prediction of scouring tendency and hole formation around structures. In this study, a three-dimensional commercial code named STAR-CCM+ has been employed to analyze the scouring process by changing some parameters that determine the depth and shape of the scouring hole. Assuming the bed can be modeled as a fluid with a high dynamic viscosity and density, predictions were made using a multi-phase flow model. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation and a realizable turbulence model are used for the model. To guarantee the reliability of the model, the results of the numerical model were compared with available laboratory measurements and reasonable agreement was observed.
