Abstract
Field of regard (FOR) is an important human’s visual range that should be considered along with field of view (FOV), but previous studies have been not considered with this aspect of human perception. In the current study, we suggest a new virtual reality (VR) paradigm with which to evaluate and analyze an individual’s FOR range. We measured a detection time and accuracy of subjects using FOV, FOR, and FOR with visual cue (FOR-cue) condition, and we evaluated healthy young adults’ responses using the proposed paradigm. The results of the subjects showed that the detection time of FOV condition was faster than those of the FOR-cue and FOR conditions, and the FOR-cue was faster than the FOR condition. Surprisingly, we found a unique characteristic in the FOR condition that did not exist in the FOV and FOR-cue conditions: The participants’ responses were faster for the left side than the right side. To ensure that repeat this finding on the FOR condition, we performed a second experiment with new samples and four blocks of FOR condition. The results of the second experiment were consistent with the first, and the results of head motion trajectory using the proposed analysis tool showed that participants had more movement toward the left side than the right side in the early parts of each trial, and we found that there were learning effects on the detection time, total head movements, and head movement trajectory. The implication of these results and potential attention bias factors are discussed.
