Subways rely solely on traffic incomes to solve the numerous pending problems that they have including the limits in political measures that can be applied in order to actualize transportation costs, dissolving construction debts, and acquiring the vast financial resources that need to be invested in safety measures. However, this method is facing a crisis as the 5-day week system, put into force last year, caused a decrease in the numbers of passengers. Therefore, the development of the regions surrounding subway stations can no longer be avoided if they are to maintain and secure a reasonable number of passengers and promote business diversification. This study will then derive a desirable and systematic plan for the development of regions surrounding subway stations through analysis on the problems with existing cases of developing regions around subway stations, cases of development from advanced countries, and recent policies.
