아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤의『 열대병』에 나타난 시간성 연구－들뢰즈의 시간-이미지론을 중심으로－

Abstract

본 논문은 질 들뢰즈의 ‘시간-이미지’론을 바탕으로 아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤의 영화 『열대병』(2004)에 나타난 시간의 구조와 그 의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아피찻퐁은 특히『열대병』서 매우 정교하고 실험적인 방식으로 잠재태적 시간의 다양한 층위들을 탐사하고 형식화한다. 영화에서는 과거의 현재, 현재의 현재, 미래의 현재 같은 잠재태적 현재들이 서로 구분할 수 없게 뒤섞여 있으며, 실재의 시간, 상상의 시간, 꿈의 시간이 혼재해 있고, 거대한 잠재태적 과거를 이루는 수많은 과거의 시트들이 현실태적 현재의 막을 뚫고 나타난다. 『열대병』이 구현하는 이러한 시간 구조는 들뢰즈가 말하는 ‘시간-이미지의 영화’의 시간 구조와 매우 유사한데, 시간-이미지의 영화란 무엇보다 현재의 첨점들과 과거의 시트들 사이를 빈번히 오가면서 시간의 전체성에 대해 끊임없이 숙고하는 영화를 가리키기 때문이다. 시간-이미지의 영화는 규칙적이고 연대기적이며 수평적인 시간의 구조로부터 벗어나는 영화를 말하며, 그 자체로 하나의 거대한 영역을 이루고 있는 잠재태적 시간을 탐사하는 영화를 말한다.

This article aims to examine the structure and the meaning of time in a film Tropical Malady(2004) by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, based on the theory of the “time-image” proposed by Gilles Deleuze. Apichatpong in this film explores various levels of virtual time, very subtle and profound way, and inextricably mixed the present of the future, the present of the present and the present of the past, as well as the real, the imaginary and the dream. Such a structure of time that we meet in the film is very reminiscent of the cinema of the time-image. According to Deleuze, the cinema of the time-image refers above all to the film that contemplates the totality of time by browsing endlessly between different past and present. As Tropical Malady, it means the film that escapes of the regular structure of chronological and horizontal time and that shows us the broad field of irregular, non-chronological, vertical time.
