Abstract
The incidence of natural disaster has steadily increased nationwide and worldwide as well. Efficient and prompt evacuation is critical in urban environments and structures to prevent extensive damage to human life and property. A realistic natural disaster simulation is needed for effective emergency evacuation training; however, currently existing contents are instructive and lack of the high sense of presence to trainees. The purpose of the study was to develop and pilot a three dimensional (3D) projection mapping simulation for natural disaster evacuation (i.e., earthquake) with healthy young adults. Psychological, physiological (i.e., heart rate) and action responses were recorded both in the 3D projection mapping and control groups. Results showed that psychological responses were significant across training periods (p<.001).Physiological and action responses were significant across training periods (p<.001). More importantly, psychological status (i.e.,higher versus relatively lower anxiety) was of an influence on physiological and action responses. That is, highly anxious individuals in the 3D projection mapping group showed tendency of increases in heart rate and delays in action response. The findings suggested that a 3D projection mapping is highly simulative of a real natural disaster and potentially effective to train emotional reluctance and risk decision making in such emergency evacuation.
