Abstract
There is an increasing number of studies aiming to increase the significance of stress measurement results through heart rate variability (HRV) metrics in a mobile or wearable environment. However, since most of the conventional HRV metrics are not suitable for the above environment, it is necessary to develop an HRV metric as a new stress index suitable for the above environment. The purpose of this study is to develop a new HRV metric suitable for measuring mental stress in a mobile or wearable environment and to evaluate its stress assessment performance. In this study, we develop a new HRV metric that can assess stress significantly in mobile or wearable environment and evaluate its stress assessment performance. The proposed HRV metric is designed to output the relative stress level as a quantitative value using the reference value obtained from the relax state and the HRV distribution. Based on the R-R interval (RR) data measured by the subject in accordance with the laboratory experimental protocol, the stress assessment performance of the proposed HRV metric was evaluated through comparison with the conventional HRV metrics. The stress assessment performance of the proposed HRV metric is determined through three steps: Evaluation of personalization performance by waveform observation, Evaluation of significance change of difference value of each HRV metrics according to decrease of segment length by Tukey multiple comparison test, Evauation of the noise effects on each HRV metrics by comparing the waveforms of the HRV metrics and the Tukey multiple comparison test results obtained for the normal RRi and the ectopic beats inserted abnormal RRi. As a result, the conventional HRV metrics showed a waveform that was impossible to estimate the stress level for some subjects, but the proposed HRV metric showed a standardized waveforms that can estimate the stress level for all subjects. In other words, the proposed HRV metric are not affected by individual differences. Next, The Tukey test results showed that only proposed HRV metric showed significant differences in all the experimental phases-pairs. In addition, when the segment length was decreased (30s to 10s), the significance of the difference between experimental phases for some conventional HRV metrics decreased significantly, while the proposed HRV metric showed little change. Therefore, the proposed HRV metric can show more significant stress assessment results than other HRV metrics even at a short analysis time of 10 seconds. Finally, the results of the noise analysis showed that the significance of the difference of the proposed HRV metric was high when there was no noise and when there was no noise, and other conventional HRV metrics showed that the significance of the difference was decreased when large noise was exist. Therefore, the proposed HRV metric can show significant stress assessment results even in a noisy environment. After all, in measuring stress in a mobile or wearable environment, the proposed HRV metric is a more appropriate mental stress index than the other HRV metrics
