사운드스케이프와 음악의 만남: 《런던의 외침》(Cries of London) 전통에 대한베리오의 재해석

Abstract

이 글은 베리오가 과거의 소재를 재해석하여 작곡한 《런던의 외침》에 대해 검토한다. 이 작품은 역사적으로 잘 알려진 옛 런던 행상인들의 외침을소재로 하여 대중적 관심을 위해 기획하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 작품안에는 중요한 음악적 이슈들이 다양한 층위로 관련되어 있다. 이 글은 베리오의 《런던의 외침》이 어떻게 다양한 음악적 이슈들과 만나는지 살펴보고, 베리오가 드러내려고 하였던 궁극적 의미를 해석해 본다. 논의는 일상의 소리가 음악과 어떻게 만나는지, 과거의 소재가 새로운 요소와 상호텍스트성의 관계 속에서 어떻게 재해석되는지, 말소리가 음향적 요소로 사용됨으로써 음악 작품 안에서 어떠한 의미를 갖는지에 대해 세부적으로 진행된다. This paper explores how Berio reinterprets historically well-know Cries of London. Berio had written the vocal work using the text which was chosen among the cries of old London street vendors for popular interest. Nevertheless, this work related with the important multi-layered musical issues. This paper aims to examine how the music meets these various issues, and then interprets what is the final aim at which Berio reached. For this purpose, the paper surveys how music mediates the soundscape, how the past elements is reinterpreted in the intertextual relationship with the new, and how the words or speech sound have the special meaning by using acoustic elements in the musical work.
