조선시대 화조화의 담채법(淡彩法)에 관한 고찰 - 신사임당의 8폭 초충도를 중심으로 -

Abstract

전통회화의 채색법은 통상적으로 수묵담채와 진채로 구분되어왔으나， 본 연구에서는 단지 수묵화의 보조적 수단을 넘어서 전통회화의 사상적 배경과 조형의식을 반영하고 있는 담채의 의미를 새롭게 조명하는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 이에 성리학을 배경으로 하는 조선시대의 회화관에서 핵심적인 가치로 다루어졌던 평담천진의 사상을 중심으로 담채법의 사상적， 미학적 배경에 관하여 살펴보았다. 또한 조선시대 화조화의 특성인 담(淡)의 미학을 구체화하기 위하여 도체로서의 화조화， 상징체로서의 화조화의 의미를 고찰하였다. 구체적인 작품의 예로서 평담천진 사상에 입각한 조선시대 대표적인 작품인 신사임당의 8폭 초충도를 분석하여 조선 시대 담채법이 가지는 조형적 가치와 특성에 관하여 제시하였다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 신사임당의 화조화를 중심으로， 표현 기법의 차원을 넘어서 수기의 의미와 가치를 반영하고 있는 맑은 선염법의 사상적 배경을 고찰하고 전통회화의 조형의식을 대표하는 담채법을 재조명하였다는 데에 의의가 있다. In the general understanding of traditional paintings, there is a oversimplified categorization, which divides them into Ink Painting and Thick Color Painting. In this dichotomy, Ink Wash Painting is often treated as a supplementary technique in which colors are just added to Ink painting. This study attempts to shed light on the fact that in traditional art more emphasis had been placed on the Ink Wash Painting in association with its symbolic meanings. This study examines the ideological and aesthetical background of the Ink Wash Painting technique in order to unveil the width and breadth of meanings entailed by Ink Wash Painting. Focusing on the Ink Wash Painting technique used in Flower-and-Bird Paintings of Chosun Dynasty. the nature and characteristics of Ink Wash Painting is further elaborated. The Flower-and-Bird Paintings created by Shin Saimdang are discussed as the exemplary case that embodies the Pyeong-Dam-Cheon-Jin ideology by artistically employing the Ink Wash Painting technique. This research has the implications for traditional art education in the sense that it broadens our understanding of Ink Wash Painting by revisiting its ideological and aesthetic significances in traditional art.
