브리짓 라일리 작품의 조형적 특성을 활용한 뮤럴벽지디자인 개발연구

Abstract

사회적 흐름 속에서, 표현력과 개성이 뛰어난 뮤럴벽지디자인은 소비자의 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 벽지시장의 지속적 확장에 직면하면서부터, 시장 경쟁력과고부가가치를 지닌 뮤럴벽지디자인 개발에 집중하는것이 매우 중요한 요소로 대두되었으나 다양한 디자인콘텐츠의 부재로 인한 새로운 디자인 개발이 필요한 실정이다. 이에 브리짓 라일리 작품은 강렬한 표현효과를 지닌 추상적 현대 예술로서, 벽지 시장의 경쟁력 있는 뮤럴벽지디자인에 영감을 제공할 수 있다고사료되었다. 그러므로 연구목적은 고부가가치가 있는독창적이고 창의적인 디자인을 개발하여, 뮤럴벽지디자인에 접목시키는 방안을 모색하는 것에 그 목적을두고 있다. 본 연구범위는 브리짓 라일리 작품의 각 시대별 조형적 특성을 고찰 분석하였으며, 분석한 결과를 바탕으로 3가지 콘셉트(‘Shaking Waves’, ‘Field Wind’, ‘City Sunset’)를 선정하여 상업 실내공간에 뮤럴벽지디자인을 제안하였다. 연구방법은 국내외 서적, 논문, 웹페이지 등 문헌을통해 브리짓 라일리의 배경, 작품의 조형적 특성, 뮤럴벽지에 대한 이론적 고찰을 진행하였다. 어도비 일러스트레이터(Adobe Illustrator)와 어도비 포토샵(Adobe Photoshop)을 이용하여 뮤럴벽지디자인을 제안하였다. 브리짓 라일리 작품의 조형적 특성을 활용한 뮤럴벽지디자인 개발은 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, ‘Shaking Waves’ 주제는 호텔 로비에 적합한뮤럴벽지디자인을 제안하였다. 흑백 색채를 사용하여파도와 물방울의 반짝임과 움직임 시각 효과를 표현하였으며 개성 있는 분위기를 창출하였다. 둘째, ‘Field Wind’ 주제는 스파 센터 대기실에 적합한 편안하고시원한 느낌을 나타내었다. 선의 반복과 부드러운 색채의 조화가 산들바람이 부는 넓은 들판을 연상시켜, 안정감 있고 휴식에 적합한 공간을 나타냈다. 셋째, ‘City Sunset’ 주제는 낭만적인 느낌과 도시적 분위기를 나타냈으며, 카페 공간에 생동감을 더하였다. 따라서 브리짓 라일리 작품의 조형적 특성을 활용한 뮤럴벽지디자인 제안은 다양한 상업 공간에서 활용되어 소비자의 욕구를 만족시키기에 충분할 것이며, 뮤럴벽지디자인 산업에 무한한 가능성을 나타날 것이라고 판단된다. 더불어 공간을 예술적으로 변화시키고방문객들에게 새로운 시각적 경험을 제공함으로써, 소비자들에게 독특하고 기억에 남는 경험을 선사할 수있을 것이라고 생각되어진다. 브리짓 라일리의 예술적표현을 디자인에 접목함으로써, 뮤럴벽지는 다양한 공간에서의 가치를 높이고, 뮤럴벽지디자인 산업에 큰기여를 할 것으로 기대된다.

In today’s society, highly expressive and unique mural wallpaper designs are highly regarded among consumers. The development of market-competitive and high-value added mural wallpaper designs has gained great significance, boosted by the continued growth of the wallpaper market. However, the currently available design contents are still lacking in diversity, which warrants the development of new designs. In this regard, the works of Bridget Riley seem to be an appropriate candidate to inspire mural wallpaper designs that would be able to compete in today’s wallpaper market. As such, this study is aimed at developing unique and creative designs with high value added inspired by Bridget Rilely’s works and applying them to mural wallpapers.To that end, this study examines and analyzes the formative characteristics of her works across a number of period and uses the findings to define three concepts (Shaking Waves, Field Wind, and City Sunset) and propose mural wallpaper designs for indoor spaces of commercial facilities.As for research method, this study explores the background of Bridget Riley, the formative characteristics of her works, and theoretical approaches to mural wallpapers by reviewing the relevant literature including books, journal articles, and websites in Korea and other countries. It also proposes mural wallpaper designs created using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.The results of the mural wallpaper design development inspired by the formative characteristics of Bridget Riley’s works can be summarized as follows. First, this study proposes the ‘Shaking Waves’ designs, which are suitable for hotel lobbies. They use black and white colors to visually express the glistening and movement of waves and waterdrops and create a unique atmosphere. Second, the ‘Field Wind’ designs give off a cool atmosphere suitable for waiting rooms at spa centers. The combination of repeated lines and soft colors reminds customers of a wide field with a cool breeze, which makes the designs suitable for a space for calm relaxation. Third, the ‘City Sunset’ designs represent romance and the urban ambience, which will add liveliness to cafe spaces.The proposed mural wallpaper designs inspired by the formative characteristics of Bridget Rilely’s works can sufficiently satisfy customers’ needs in various commercial spaces. As such, they hold infinite possibilities for the mural wallpaper design industry. In addition, the researcher believes that they will present consumers with highly unique and memorable experiences by artistically changing the spaces they visit and providing them with new visuals. The grafting of Bridget Rilely’s artistic expressions to mural wallpaper designs is expected to enhance the value of mural wallpaper in various spaces and thus contribute to the mural wallpaper design industry in general.
