Abstract
In the context of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, construction projects are growing increasingly complex. The level of coordination among multinational companies is increasing, demanding intricate design requirements from the outset, with the support of design software like energy simulation, complex structural calculations, and sophisticated spatial design. However, a research gap must exist in guiding design software selection for such projects. This study explores the critical factors influencing software adoption during the concept design phase in Vietnam's AEC industry. The study employed a mixed-methods approach: qualitative analysis for planning and question development, followed by a questionnaire created from a literature review. Quantitative analysis with statistical tests assessed software selection factors. The findings highlight Key Importance Factors (KIFs), including handling large files with hardware compatibility, versatility and flexibility in functionality, interoperability, ease of use, and access to objects/libraries. This article gives architecture construction firms insights into market needs and a software selection process from the concept phase. These findings can benefit nations with construction and social systems like Vietnam. Encourage future research across various countries in both developing and developed regions to enable comparisons and assessments of software selection in the concept design phase between these countries.
