〈행복의 과학〉 연구: 영계(靈界) 사상과 네오-내셔널리즘을 중심으로

Abstract

<행복의 과학>은 1986년에 창립된 현대일본의 매우 젊은 신종교이다. 이 신생 교단은 종래 전통종교에서의 ‘고행’이라든가 사회와 단절된 이미지는 없으며, 무엇보다 서적을 통한 전도방식이 주류여서 일반인들에게도 널리 어필하는 측면을 가지고 있다. 도쿄대 법대 출신인 창시자 오카와 류호(大川隆法, 1956-현재)가 2014년 말 현재까지 출판한저서가 1,500여권에 달한다는 데에서도 엿볼 수 있듯이, 이 교단은 ‘출판과 독서의 종교’라는 이미지를 강하게 드러내고 있다. ‘엘 칸타레’라는 지고의 영적 존재를 본존으로 하고 있고 오카와 총재는 그 엘 칸타레가 지상에 모습을 나타낸 자로 말해진다. 빈병쟁(貧病爭)으로부터의 구제를 설하는 종래의 신종교와는 달리, 올바른 마음(正心)을 강조하는자기정신의 향상 및 일종의 성공법칙이나 처세술에 가까운 교의를 내세움으로써 이에공감하는 비즈니스맨이나 관료들이 대거 입회하고 있다.

본고의 목적은 이 <행복의 과학>에 있어 영계사상과 네오-내셔널리즘의 결합에 주목하면서 특히 옴사건(1995년)과 3·11 대진재(2011년)를 경계로 하여 교단의 내셔널리즘적 성격이 어떻게 변용되어 왔는지 그 내용을 고찰하는 데에 있다. 이와 관련하여 구체적으로 당대의 문화적 내셔널리즘과는 구별되는 종교적 내셔널리즘을 표출하는 단계 및, 그 종교적 내셔널리즘이 정치적 내셔널리즘과 결합한 네오-내셔널리즘이 특히3·11 이후 일본사회의 우경화 현상과 연동하면서 울트라 내셔널리즘으로 진행되는 과정을 살펴볼 것이다. 이때 오카와의 대표적 저술 및 동서양의 주요 종교창시자와 종교엘리트들, 나아가 현존하는 유명인사들의 수호령을 인터뷰하여 책으로 출간한 이른바 <영언집>을 주요 분석대상으로 삼고자 한다.;“Happy Science”(幸福の科學, Kofuku-no-Kagaku) is a very young Japanese cultic new-religion founded in 1986. Okawa Ryuho(大川隆法, 1956~), who graduated at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law, has been publishing about 1,500 books from 1986 to nowadays. This symbolically shows that the cult is “a Religion of Publication and Reading”. Okawa is said to an incarnation of “Lord El Cantare”, the supreme God of the terrestrial spirit group who has the highest authority over the planet Earth. Although its teachings are based on the Buddhist foundations of reflection and keeping Right Mind(正心), it also incorporates modern day prosperity and development in order to improve oneself and society. The purpose of this paper is to examine the nationalistic change of the cult, especially on the basis of the two criteria, Oum Affair in 1995 and 3·11 Earthquake in 2011. In so doing, I will focus on the process of the transfiguration both from cultural nationalism to religious nationalism and then to neo-nationalism which characteriz s the combination of religious nationalism and political nationalism after 3·11. In sum, this paper will pay attention to the neo-nationalism of “Happy Science” as an ultra-nationalism, which moves together with “right-leaning press”(右傾化) in contemporary Japan.
