‘일본문화론’의 관점에서 본 야마모토 시치헤이의 『일본자본주의의 정신』

Abstract

1979년에 나온 야마모토 시치헤이(山本七平)의 『일본자본주의의 정신』은 종래 주로 스즈키 쇼산(鈴木正三)과 이시다 바이간(石田梅岩)에 초점이 맞추어져 논해져 왔다. 이를테면 “에도 초기 쇼산에 의해 태동한 일본자본주의 정신이 에도 후기 바이간 및 ‘석문심학’(石門心學)에 의해 널리 퍼져 일본인의 ‘근면의 철학’이 되었으며, 농민과 직인과 상인 계급의 근로와 절약과 그 결과로서의 부의 축적을 촉진시켰다.”는 식이다. 요컨대 쇼산과 바이간의 사상이 일본자본주의 정신의 원류임을 밝힌 책이 바로 『일본자본주의의 정신』이라는 말이다. 이런 지적이 중요한 의미를 가짐은 말할 나위 없다. 그러나 종래의 연구에서 간과되거나 혹은 최소한 소홀히 다루어진 측면에도 주목하지 않으면 안 된다. 이른바 ‘일본문화론’ 또는 ‘일본인론’의 관점이 그것이다. 일본자본주의를 지탱한 것이 일본인의 근면 정신이라고 보고 그 원류를 쇼산과 바이간에게서 찾아낸 『일본자본주의의 정신』은 결국 쇼산과 바이간의 직업윤리에 입각한 일본문화론을 서술한 책이라고 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 본고의 목적은 『일본자본주의의 정신』의 총체적인 이해를 위해 그것을 일본문화론의 관점에서 재고하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 특히 기능집단과 공동체의 이원구조에 관한 야마모토의 이해에 주목하는 한편, 일본자본주의와 종교의 관계를 비롯하여 시고토, 공기, 세켄, 마코토, 화(和), 일본교 등의 핵심적인 일본문화코드에 초점을 맞추면서 일본문화론 담론의 전개에 있어 『일본자본주의의 정신』이 가지는 의의를 재평가하고자 한다.;The Spirit of Japanese Capitalism(日本資本主義の精神), published by Yamamoto Shichihei(山本七平) in 1979, has been treated mostly focusing on Suzuki Shosan(鈴木正三) and Ishida Baigan(石田梅岩). For instance, it has been often said that the spirit of Japanese capitalism originated by Shosan in the early Edo period, was widely spread throughout the whole country by Baigan and his ‘Sekimon??shingaku’(石門心學) in the late Edo period, producing ‘Japanese philosophy of diligence’ and as a result setting forward the accumulation of wealth through the hard work and frugality among farmers, craftsmen and tradesmen, etc. In sum, they say this book shows that the thoughts of Shosan and Baigan are the original forms of the spirit of Japanese capitalism. Of course, this point is of importance. Still, the perspective of so??called ‘Nihonbunkaron’(日本文化論) or ‘Nihonjinron’(日本人論) might be of much notice, too. Because we can say that The Spirit of Japanese Capitalism must be a book which has described Nihonbunkaron based on work ethic of Shosan and Baigan. The purpose of this essay is to reexamine The Spirit of Japanese Capitalism for its total understanding from the perspective of Nihonbunkaron. In so doing, I will pay special attention to several aspects such as Yamamoto’s views on the dual structure of functional group and community, the relationship between Japanese Capitalism and religion, with analyzing main cultural codes such as Shigoto(仕事), Kuki(空氣), Seken(世間), Makoto(誠), Wa(和), and Nihonkyo(日本敎).
