여행경력 재개념화에 관한 연구: 레크리에이션 전문화 이론을 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구의 목적은 여행경력(travel career)의 개념을 재정립하고 하위요인을 제시하는데 있다. 여행경력 개념이 관광학 분야에 제시된 이후, 여행경력이 유발하는 여행자의 동기 변화를 중심으로 다양한 연구들이 수행되어왔다. 하지만 여행경력의 효과와 영향은 연구마다 일치하지 않은 결과를 제시하며, 관련 개념이 아직 체계적이고 타당한 이론적 체계를 갖추지 못하였음을 확인하였다(고동우, 2019). 구체적인 선행연구의 한계는 1) 여행경력 개념의 비일관성 2) 하위요인에 대한 논의 부족 3) 여행경력을 ‘행동’, ‘정서’ 만으로 측정한 부분이다. 이에 따라 여행경력의 개념과 하위요인에 대한 논의를 확장하는 것이 중요할 것으로 판단되었다. 이에 이 연구는 여가학 분야의 전문화(specialization)이론인 레크리에이션 전문화(recreation specialization)를 적용하여, 여행경력의 통합적 모형을 제시하였다. 레크리에이션 전문화는 여가활동의 참여수준을 타당하게 설명할 수 있는 이론으로, 관광학 분야에서도 경력의 개념과 가치를 보완할 수 있는 유용한 개념이다(Pearce & Lee, 2005). 이 연구의 가장 큰 의의는 여행경력에 대한 일관적 개념과 하위요인이 부재한 가운데 선행연구에서 도출된 문제점을 고찰하고, 타당성 검토를 거쳐 여행경력을 재개념화 하였다는 것이다. 또한 레크리에이션 전문화 이론을 적용하여 행동, 인지, 정서를 포함하는 다차원적 개념으로 여행경력의 하위요인을 구성하였다. 특히 인지적 차원은 여행경력 관련 연구에서 논의가 매우 미흡했던 부분으로 여행경력 개념의 이론적 체계를 확장하는데 기여한 연구로 판단된다.;Since Pearce (1988) first suggested the concept of travel career in the tourism field, various research has been conducted, mainly focused on travelers’ psychological and behavioral changes induced by different travel careers. However, the effect and influence of travel careers varied across studies, indicating that the concept has yet to achieve a systematic and valid theory structure (Ko, 2018). More specifically, the limits of previous research are: 1) inconsistency of travel career 2) There is no discussion of subelements. 3) evaluating a travel career solely on the basis of "behavior" and "affect." Therefore, it is important to draw an integrated conceptual model of a travel career and expand the discussion on subelements. In the field of leisure science, the level of participation in leisure activities is explained by the recreation specialization theory. Previous research has found that travel experience encompasses a variety of leisure behavior characteristics, and that theoretical structure on leisure phenomena provides a significant lead to understanding the characteristics of travel experience (Ko, 2017). On the basis of such a theoretical background, this study applies recreation specialization theory to the conceptualization of travel careers. The main significance of this study is that, while the concept of travel career lacked consistency and subelements, it considered problems drawn from prior studies and developed a systematically complemented measurement tool. Also, with the application of recreation specialization theory, a travel career was constructed with multiple dimensions, including subelements of behavior, cognition, and affect. In particular, the cognitive dimension was scarcely discussed in prior research and it made a contribution to the expansion of the theoretical structure of the travel career concept.
