한국어 수식절 처리의 상대적 난이도: 시선추적 연구

Abstract

한국어 수식절에는 체언을 수식하는 관형사절 외에도 용언이나 문장 전체를 수식하는 부사절이 존재한다. 본 연구에서는 한국어의 특성을 기반으로 한 관계화 위계규명을 위해 수식절인 관형사절과 부사절의 상대적 난이도를 조사하였다. 연구를 위해 총 65명의 한국어 모어 화자와 한국어 학습자가 실험에 참여하였다. 이들은 총 48개의 한국어 수식절 문장을 읽고 이해도 측정 문제에 답을 하였으며, 시선추적 장비를 통해 이 과정을 관찰하였다. 문장 이해도, 응시시간, 후처리 시간 등의 측정 변인을 분석한 결과, 한국어 수식절은 ‘도치 부사절 < 내포 부사절 < 내포 관형절 < 도치 관형절’의 순으로 난이도 위계가 존재함을 확인하였다. 또한, 수식절 형태 간 처리 속도의 차이는 어휘적 의미를 파악하는 전처리 단계에서는 나타나지 않고 통사적 구조를 파악하고 의미역을 할당하는 후처리 단계에서 나타났다. 상기 결과는 통사적 거리 가설과 구조적 거리 가설 모두를 적용하여 설명이 가능하였다. Korean sentences can have both noun-modifying relative clauses and adverbial relative clauses unlike most Indo-European languages, The current study aims to find the relative difficulty in processing these two clauses. 65 participants including Korean native speakers and Korean L2 learners read 48 stimulus sentences and answered the comprehension check questions while their eye fixations were being observed using an eye-tracker. The results based on the analysis of comprehension score, fixation duration, first-pass and second-pass reading time showed the difficulty hierarchy as ‘non-canonical adverbial clauses < canonical adverbial clauses < canonical relative clauses < non-canonical relative clauses.’ The difference in the processing difficulty was resulted from the second-pass reading time whereas the first-pass reading time was similar across relative clauses within groups. Both the Dependency Locality Theory and the Phrase-Structural Distance Theory were able to explain the results.
