In the design of gear pairs, we should make design trade-off between the volume and meshing vibration. This paper presents a method for solving gear design problems using goal programming techniques. The method can be used to reduce both the volume and meshing vibration of helical gears while satisfying various constraints, such as interference and tooth strength. The design results are obtained for the two types of conflicting objectives: (1) volume and vibration excitation force, (2) volume and total contact ratio. We also show the effectiveness of the method through the redesign of a helical gear pair currently being used in elevator reduction drive.en_US
