Subject Deletion in Korean Texts

Abstract

This paper compares four text types, personal letters, newspaper articles, newspaper editorials, and the abstracts of academic texts to see differences between genres in terms of subject-deletion in Korean. It demonstrates boht similarities and differences in the frequency of the subject deletion, the types of deleted subject, and the relationship between a deleted subject and a discourse topic across genres. Those similarities and differences resulted from teh reader/writer interaction, shared knowledge, and reader/writer responsibility for communication.
