Abstract
Recent developments concerning research on and application of high-strength, highperformance concrete in Korea Building Industries are reported in this paper. In 1990, the Department o f Construction initiated the building o f 2 million housing units in five new satellite cities around Seoul and mandated some taller buildings to properly shape the skylines of the new satellite cities. Since this project requires apartment buildings up to 30 stories high, the technical necessity of using high-strength, high-performance concrete suddenly draws attention. In 1994,the Department of Construction initiated three research projects for a two-year period as the first phase of a research program. One of the projects is on Improvement of concrete performance. Concrete performance is further divided Into three categories: high strength concrete, durable concrete and flowing concrete,1^ And the Department of Construction has been worked one ultra high rise building project (130 stories : MT 130) for two years as a second phase in 1997. 100 MPa concrete compressive strength was used for central corewall. Concrete with 70 MPa and 120 MPa compressive strength have been used in the Samsung Sin Dae-Bang Project in Seoul-a 28-story residential-commercial building with an 8-story basement. The concrete was placed in the shear w alls at all eight basement Bevels. Concrete with a design strength of 42 MPa was used In the frame of the first ten floors above the basement, which are used for commercial purposes.3) In 2002, 80 MPa concrete compressive strength has been used for 69 stories, Tower PalacelH project corewall successfully.
