Abstract
The purpose of study was to divelop a develop a new assessment method of biodegradable ofganecs degradation through heat balance analysis including metabolic heat and varying heat losses. The heats in the composting process were classified into heat supply, heat loss and heat store, and them each heat included in the heat balance equation was expressed quantitatively. Then, the heat balance equation was rearranged to a function of temperature and solid for real-time assessment of organic degradation. Finally, the calculated values were compared with the experimental data. Biodegradable volatile solid( BVS) degradation rate calculated by the assessment equation gave a good agreement with the measured value, showing 90 % of BVS degradation rate and 96 % of water content to the measured in the final product of the experiment. Among the heat components, the calorific value of the input material affected the results very sensitively. For the heat losses, the heat loss by conduction through the reactor wall was the most significant component, following with the latent heat in theexhaust gas. The most important finding of this study was evaluated the feasibility of continuous calculation of degradation rate in real-time using the temperature. In this study, coefficients and properties used in the assessment equation were common values. If pertinent values could be applied to the equation, a more accurate result would be abtained.
