Horizontal drain method is widely perceived as one of a surface soil stabilization techniques used to obtain a strength in very soft ground, especially 5 meters below the ground surface. However, there are many unknown factors related to the efficiency and applicability. In this study, a series of laboratory tests were performed to estimate the influencing factors on horizontal drain method, such as strength property and discharge capacity of drain board according to the test condition. In addition, laboratory medium size soil box test was performed to evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of horizontal drain method of the improvement in very soft ground.en_US
