Abstract
This study investigated a heat sink of a typical-shaped LED bulb having a circular base and a concentric hollow cylinder. The heat sink consists of L-type fins that are radially installed around the concentric cylinder. The center of a general square-shaped fin was cut into a rectangle, and a study was conducted with a fin having a shape similar to the letter “L.” The heat dissipation performance of the L-type heat sink was investigated in terms of the thermal resistance of the heat sink. A numerical analysis model was established to analyze the thermal resistance of the heat sink. The model was verified by conducting experiments on the manufactured heat sink. A parametric study for the following five variables was conducted: Rayleigh number, porosity factor, finning factor, installation angle, and radius of the heat sink base. Through this parametric study, a correlation predicting the thermal resistance of the L-type heat sink was derived. The thermal resistance could be accurately predicted using the derived correlation equation within an error of approximately 10% compared to the thermal resistance obtained through the numerical analysis. Moreover, it can be conveniently used when manufacturing L-type heat sinks.
