INTERNAL LOW-PROFILE METAL-PLATE MONOPOLE ANTENNA FOR DTV PORTABLE MULTIMEDIA PLAYER

Abstract

In this thesis, a low-profile metal-plate monopole antenna for mobile handset operating over DTV band is studied. Digital-TV(DTV) broadcasting provide much more vivid picture quality than analogue service does. It also provides special features such as multicasting, various multimedia contents, and interactional capability. However, the development of internal low-profile DTV antenna is one of key issues for portable multimedia player to provide the such diverse services. The DTV antenna is operating over 470 - 850 MHz frequency band. The proposed antenna consists of a folded rectangular patch and two slits. It has a small volume of 65 x 25 x 5 mm. The ground plane of this antenna is made of FR-4 substrate (thickness of 0.8 mm). By inserting slits into the radiating patch and utilizing the mutual coupling between the antenna and system ground, the antenna size is minimized and the impedances bandwidth is broadened to cover the regularized UHF bandwidth. The measured return loss values are better than -10 dB over the whole band The manufactured monopole-like radiation patterns with good antenna gain even for such a compact size. The proposed antenna can be easily applied to DTV application.
