Abstract
The maxillary sinus occupies the 2/3s of maxillary bone. The difference in the dimensions of the maxillary sinus, which offers the essential information for endonasal endoscopic surgeon and anthropological criterion for ethnic classification, expects a corresponding shift or the variation in anatomical landmark. This study was undertaken to clarify the anthropological characteristics of the volume of the maxillary sinus and to develop a regression model that can predict the volume of the maxillary sinus. Forty four skulls (86 sinuses, 23M/21F) obtained from the collection of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology of College of Medicine, Hanyang University were studied. The mean age of the deceased was 67.6 years (range from 40 to 94 years). The volumes of the maxillary sinuses were mesured by silicon casting method and the dimensions of the maxillary sinus were measured by use of anthropometry and C-arm radiographic measurement and sixty-one independent variables in the skull and C-arm radiography were measured. The volumes of maxillary sinuses were analyzed according to gender, sides, age groups, the state of dentition, shape coefficient and medial wall area. The significant variables (r>0.03, p<0.05) were pick out by use of SPSS-13.0 program. The regression equation models were developed by multiple regression analysis. The obtained results were as follows. 1. The mean volume of the maxillary sinuses was 12.83 ± 5.41 cm3 (male: 14.23 ± 5.92 cm3, female: 11.29 ± 4.37 cm3). There was statistically significant between the values of male and female. The values of the volume of the maxillary sinus were not significant between sides and age groups. 2. The volumic symmetry and correlation coefficient between right and left maxillary sinuses were 22/42 (52.38%) and 0.636 respectively. 3. As morphological analysis, the most common shape was semi-ellipsoid (39.19%) and the index of shape coefficient was 2.78. The most common type of medial antral wall area was small (50%) and the index of medial antral wall area was 1.89. 4. The regression equation model for prediction of the volume of the maxillary sinus was: volume= 0.692 × (χ1) + 0.355 × (χ2) - 22.178 χ1 : the anteroposterior length of the maxillary sinus χ2 : the height of the maxillary sinus R2 = 0.759 The results of this study would be useful to clarify the anthropological characteristics of the maxillary sinus in Korean, to suggest the index of the medial antral wall area for ethnic classification anthropologically and to develop the regression model for perediction of the volume of the maxillary sinus by radiographical measurements.
