- Abstract
The initial green time within pedestrian signal time at a crosswalk is important variable that provides the time limit for pedestrian to enter the crosswalk. We use 4 or 7 seconds as the initial green time depending upon the traffic volume, however, we do not consider the volume and characteristics of pedestrian.
By using video camera, the pedestrian crosswalk behaviors were recorded in terms of entering-down time to crosswalk according to the entering order, and a variety of pedestrian group sizes.
The result show that the more pedestrians per cycle, the shorter the average entering time is, that is, they hurried up to cross.
Comparing this result with the existing initial green time, 7 seconds is insufficient for 16~20 pedestrians per cycle. With the result above, this study suggests 4 seconds of initial green time for 5 pedestrians or less, 6 seconds for 6~10 pedestrians and 10 seconds for 31 pedestrians or more per cycle.
