1980년 이후 패션 테마의 공존현상에 관한 연구

패션은 문화적 산물로서, 패션 스타일을 구분하는 방식에 영향을 미치는 어떤 하나의 테마는 특정 시대의 사회 문화적 요인의 복합적인 상호작용에 따라 각각 다른 양상으로 나타날 수가 있다. 특히 20세기 후반의 정보화ㆍ세계화에 따른 거대한 변화의 흐름 속에서, 패션 역시 더 이상 하나의 룩(look)이나 지배적인 실루엣을 식별하는 것이 어려울 정도로 가속화와 다양화를 겪고 있다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 1980년부터 2009년 현재까지의 패션 테마의 공존현상을 공시적(共時的)ㆍ통시적(通時的) 관점에서 고찰함으로써 시대적 변화에 따른 패션 테마의 경향과 패션 테마 별 공존현상의 추이를 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구는 문헌연구를 통하여 1980년대 이후 각 시대에 나타난 패션의 특성과 디자인의 영감이 되는 요소, 그리고 인간의 사유기준이 되는 시간과 공간의 개념을 복합적으로 고려하여 역사주의, 미래주의, 민속주의, 자연주의의 4개 패션 테마를 도출하였고, 패션 테마 별로 하위테마를 분류하였다. 실증연구로는 1980년부터 2009년까지 30년간에 걸쳐 간행된 미국 패션잡지 Vogue의 매해 1월호와 7월호에 해당하는 총 59권 가운데, 패션 칼럼 ‘View’와 ‘Point of view’의 기사에서 추출된 총 2422개의 어휘에 대한 내용분석을 실시하였다. 연구시기는 1980년대, 1990년대, 2000년대의 10년 단위로 나누어 분석하였다. 본 연구에 대한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 1980년대부터 2000년대까지 30년간에 걸쳐 역사주의, 미래주의, 민속주의, 자연주의의 4개 테마가 언제나 공존하였고, 모든 시대에 있어서 역사주의가 가장 높게 나타났다. 시대적 변화에 따라 역사주의에 이어 1980년대는 민속주의가 높게 나타났으며, 1990년대에는 미래주의가 높게 나타났고, 2000년대에는 자연주의가 높게 나타났다. 패션 테마의 시즌 별 공존현상 추이를 살펴보면, 1980년대의 9개 시즌과 1990년대의 10개 시즌, 그리고 2000년대의 8개 시즌에서 패션 테마의 공존현상이 두드러지게 나타났으며, 특히 1990년대에는 3개 이상의 테마가 공존하는 현상이 더 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 패션 테마 별 하위테마의 시대별 분포와 시즌 별 공존현상의 추이를 살펴보면 역사주의 테마의 경우, 1980년대와 2000년대에는 50년대룩이 높게 나타났으나, 1990년대에는 60년대룩이 더 높게 나타났다. 역사주의 하위테마의 시즌 별 공존현상에 나타난 추이를 살펴보면, 1980년대의 7개 시즌, 1990년대의 9개 시즌, 2000년대의 7개 시즌에서 공존현상이 나타났다. 특히 1990년대에 더욱 다양한 역사적 시기의 룩이 한 시즌에 공존하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 미래주의 테마의 경우, 모든 시대에 있어서 기능성룩이 가장 높게 나타났다. 기능성룩 다음으로 1980년대와 1990년대에는 바디컨셔스룩이 더 영향을 미쳤고, 2000년대에는 스페이스룩이 더 많이 나타났다. 미래주의 하위테마의 시즌 별 공존현상에 나타난 추이를 살펴보면, 1980년대에는 공존현상이 나타나지 않았으나, 1990년대의 5개 시즌, 2000년대의 1개 시즌에서 공존현상이 나타났다. 민속주의 테마의 경우, 1980년대에는 유럽룩이 높게 나타났고, 1990년대에는 아시아룩이 높게 나타났으며, 2000년대에는 다시 유럽룩이 높게 나타났다. 특히 1990년대에 좀더 광범위한 민속룩이 다양하게 나타났음을 알 수 있다. 또한 1980년대의 3개 시즌과 1990년대의 1개 시즌에서 공존현상이 나타났다. 마지막으로 자연주의 테마의 경우, 1980년대에는 내추럴룩이 높게 나타났고, 1990년대에는 에코룩이 높게 나타났으며, 2000년대에는 내추럴룩, 에코룩, 수공예룩이 모두 비슷한 분포로 고르게 나타났음을 알 수 있다. 1980년대의 3개 시즌과 1990년대의 1개 시즌, 그리고 2000년대의 1개 시즌에서 공존현상이 나타났으며, 1980년대와 1990년대에는 내추럴룩과 에코룩이 공존하였으나 2000년대에는 에코룩과 수공예룩이 공존한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 패션 테마 별 하위테마에 나타난 어휘의 내용을 비교해보면, 시대적 변화에 따라 차이가 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 통하여 패션 테마의 공존현상과 패션 테마 별 하위테마의 공존현상, 그리고 패션 테마 별 추출어휘의 내용이 시대적 변화에 따라 차이가 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 패션 테마의 공존현상을 통하여 패션 트렌드가 당대의 시대정신을 반영하고 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 이는 동시에 존재하는 수 많은 패션 트렌드의 다양성 안에는 보이지 않는 질서가 나타나고 있음을 의미한다고 하겠다; ABSTRACT

The Phenomenon of Fashion Theme Coexistence from 1980 to 2009 -Focused on Content Analysis of Vogue magazine-

Today fashion, as a complex phenomenon, is not dictated from a single look and there is no longer a dominant silhouette. And the trend which was the style presented every fashion season, has been replaced by several coexisting trends. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of fashion theme coexistence and make comparison of the changes presented in a 30-year period to understand the status of trend and the spirit of the times. The data were collected from 59 volumes of the “Vogue” magazine for January and July in each year from 1980 to 2009. The data used for content analysis consisted of 2422 words and these were condensed into three periods according to decade: 1980-1989, 1990-1999, and 2000-2009. The words selected were classified into four fashion themes: historicism, futurism, ethnic, and naturalism, then each theme was divided again into several sub-themes according to literature review. The frequencies and percentages were calculated to make comparison of the changes. The results are summarized as follows: First, four fashion themes were found in all periods and historicism was highly represented in every decade. Following historicism, ethnic was in the 1980s, futurism was in the 1990s, and naturalism was more frequent theme than other themes in the 2000s. Especially, fashion themes showed the largest percentage in the 1990s. The phenomenon of fashion theme coexistence in season appeared most frequently in the 1990s showing nine seasons in the 1980s, ten seasons in the 1990s, and eight seasons in the 2000s. Second, there were the changes in the phenomenon of sub-theme coexistence in every decade and season. In the case of historicism, all the sub-themes were found in every decade, especially, the fifties look was the largest percentage in the 1980s and 2000s, while the sixties look was higher than other historical looks in the 1990s. The phenomenon of sub-theme coexistence in season presented seven seasons in the 1980s, nine seasons in the 1990s, and seven seasons in the 2000s. Particularly, the various historical looks were appeared in the 1990s. In the case of futurism, all the sub-themes were found in every decade, especially, functional look was highly presented in all periods. Following functional look, body-conscious look was higher than other sub-themes in the 1980s and 1990s, while space look was in the 2000s. The phenomenon of sub-theme coexistence in season demonstrated five seasons in the 1990s and one season in the 2000s, and showed the most variously in the 1990s. In the case of ethnic, European look was highly presented in the 1980s and 2000s, while Asian look was in the 1990s. In particular, the phenomenon of sub-themes coexistence in season presented three seasons in the 1980s and one season in the 1990s and showed more variously in the 1980s. Finally, in the case of naturalism, natural look was higher than others in the 1980s and eco look was in the 1990s, while natural look, eco look, and hand-crafted look were found all together in the 2000s. The phenomenon of sub-themes coexistence in season appeared three seasons in the 1980s, one season in the 1990s and 2000s. Third, the words of sub-themes by fashion theme demonstrated the differences in every decade. This study found that there were differences in the phenomenon of fashion theme coexistence and of sub-themes coexistence in times, and fashion trend reflects their times.
