사회적 주체로서의 여성의 한계

Abstract

조지 버나드 쇼(George Bernard Shaw)는 그의 많은 작품들을 통해 불평등하고 부조리한 사회를 변화시키기 위해 노력한 작가이다. 특히 입센의 A Doll's House를 접한 쇼는, 자본주의와 권력에서 소외당한 여성의 불평등한 상태에 관심을 가지고 그의 희곡 작품들을 완성해 나갔다. 그의 초기와 후기의 대표작품인 Mrs. Warren's Profession과 Saint Joan의 두 여주인공 Vivie와 Joan은 기존의 가치관을 탈피하여 여성의 발전상을 나타낸 쇼의 대표적인 여성들이라 할 수 있다. 쇼는 Mrs. Warren's Profession을 통해 자본주의가 가난한 여성들을 돈벌이나 작업환경에 있어서 공장보다 더 나은 매춘으로 몰아낸다는 주장을 하고 있다. 쇼는 이 극이 매춘 옹호가 아닌 시장주의 체제의 모순을 일깨우는데 그 목적이 있다고 했다. 주인공 비비는 신여성으로서 자신의 정신적, 경제적 독립을 위해 어머니가 주는 부의 안락을 떠나고, 독신여성으로서 스스로 돈을 번다. 비비는 자본주의 사회의 여성이 남성과 동등하게 정치적, 사회적 권리를 주장하기 위해서는 경제활동을 해야 한다고 말하고 있다. 쇼는 Saint Joan에서 개인, 특히 여성을 억압하는 사회의 낡고 잘못된 인습과 규칙들을 보여주고 있다. 주인공 조운은 자신의 자유를 찾기 위해, 빅토리아 사회의 인습과 정치, 종교, 사회적 권위에 도전한다. 특히, 쇼는 자신의 사상을 전달하기 위해 작품 속 주인공들을 토론하게 한다. 자기 이익을 위해 혈안 되어있는 정치, 종교, 사회적 지도자들에게 토론하게 함으로서, 관객으로 하여금 진실을 보게 하여, 변화된 생각으로 새로운 행동을 취하게 한다. 관객의 감정이 아닌 이성에 호소한다는 점에서 그 맥락을 같이하고, 쇼의 자연주의와 토론극 형식을 차용한 브레히트는 서사극 이론을 확립하면서, 쇼가 브레히트 자신에게 미친 영향력을 자주 언급하곤 했다. 그는 관객이 무대 위의 사건에 대해 비판적 태도를 취할 수 있는 효과적인 방법으로서 소외효과를 발전시켰다. 노래와 시, 언어소외와 가치전도, 역사적 인물과 사건을 사용한 것이 그 예라 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 비비와 조운을 ‘Unwomanly Super Woman'으로 내세워 빅토리아조의 억압된 여성들과 차별을 둔 쇼의 독립적인 신여성들을 통해 시장과 권력으로부터 소외된 여성상을 나타내고, 빅토리아 시대의 소외된 ’Womanly Woman'보다 사회적, 경제적, 정치적으로 더 강력하고 자유로운 쇼의 신여성상을 모색하고자 한다.; George Bernard Shaw tried to change unequal conditions and absurdities in society through his many works. After meeting Ibsen's A Doll's House in the theater, Shaw focused on women's estrangement from power and market places. In Mrs. Warren's Profession, Shaw dramatizes his belief that capitalism forces women of the lower classes into prostitution, where the wages and working conditions were ironically better than those of the factory workers. The purpose of this naturalistic play was not to defend prostitution for its higher economic value, but to awaken Victorian society from its hypocrisy. In the play, the New Woman Vivie tries to attain her spiritual and economic independence by being single, leaving her wealthy mother and living on her own. Through Vivie's character Shaw shows that women under capitalism should be independent and engage in economical activities to attain those political and social rights only available to men. In Saint Joan, Shaw tried to show the old and oppressive social customs and rules which exert control over the individual, especially over the women. Joan rebels against the conventions of Victorian society: she resists against all political, social and religious authorities and conventions in order to get her freedom back by choosing death. On Shaw's stage is a place for discussion. Although it is a one-way communication, the audience is encouraged to think, reflect and take actions on what they are instructed. In Shaw's plays, we observe many elements of "Epic theater", which means the ideas and purposes of Shaw's and Brecht's plays share certain features. Brecht believed that theatre should appeal not to the spectator's feelings but to his or her reason. While still providing entertainment, it should be strongly didactic and capable of provoking social change. To encourage the audience to adopt a more critical attitude to what was happening on stage, Brecht developed his notion of "alienation effects". For example, the use of anti-illusive techniques to remind the spectators that they are in a theatre watching a fake reality instead of reality. Such techniques include music and songs, language alienation and conversion, and the setting of historical figures and events. In conclusion, Joan and Vivie, as unwomanly super women, achieve hard-won independence. Also, they become more powerful and freer--socially, economically and psychologically--than the Victorian alienated womanly women.
