Abstract
Recently, subscriber access network technologies are being developed to support various multimedia services such as IPTV(Internet Protocol Television), VoD(Video on Demand), internet phone, and internet services. Especially, PON(Passive Optical Network) is a point-to-multipoint method in which one OLT(Optical Line Terminal) and many ONT(Optical Network Terminal) are connected. In other words, if an IPTV viewer is joining a specific multicast group over shared access networks, the others receive the channel at the same time although they do not belong to the same multicast group. However, the traditional IGMP versions do not allow immediate channel sharing as explained about. Also, in traditional IGMP versions, a viewer always needs to send IGMP join report. IPTV viewers over shared access networks must endure the several milliseconds of the channel change response time when changing channels due to IGMP join and leave time on the network, time for IGMP processing and time for the requested channel to reach the IPTV terminal. Therefore, each viewer of the same service node in shared access networks should be able to watch immediately the shared IPTV channels without the channel change response time. This thesis proposes a new IGMP which improves group join and leave process in shared access networks especially for IPTV services.
