Abstract
Recently, the demand for high speed Internet service on wireless environment has increased and mobile services have been the focus of interest. Also many types of mobile devices have been being advanced to support enriched multimedia services such as mobile IPTV (Internet Protocol Television),VoD (Video on Demand), mVoIP (mobile Voice on Internet Protocol) and so on. Especially, for offering mobile IPTV service in the wireless environment, 3GPP has introduced Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (E-MBMS) from LTE-Advanced in release 8. E-MBMS transmits mobile IPTV steams via a point-to-multipoint method in which one eNodeB (eNB) and many User Equipments (UEs) such as cellular phones and PDAs are connected to a service area. In other words, all viewers connected to the same service node receive both the broadcasting program they have requested as well as the broadcasting program they have not requested. When a user wants to change a mobile IPTV channel, a traditional IGMP join and leave report is used in E-MBMS. However, the traditional IGMP does not allow immediate multimedia channel change. Moreover, in traditional IGMP, a viewer always needs to send IGMP join report to change a mobile IPTV channel, even though the requested channel has been already received from an eNB via broadcasting manner. In addition, the viewer should wait until the requested channel is retransmitted from eNB until authentication, accounting and authorization processes in BM-SC. Therefore, using traditional IGMP method for changing a mobile IPTV channel is inefficient and causes a channel change response time as well. In this thesis, we propose a modified IGMP which supports efficient multicast group management in E-MBMS to reduce channel zapping time significantly. The simulation results show a significant reduction, of the channel change time for popular mobile IPTV channels when the IGMP extension has been implemented. Also, we propose mobile IPTV service framework in E-MBMS. The proposed mobile IPTV service framework is able to provide seamless services on mobile devices.
