Abstract
Since the Genetically modified foods such as GM potato, GM soybean oil and GM pepper were allowed to circulate in the Chinese food market successively, there is a concern about the extent to which consumers will accept and purchase genetically modified foods if they are commercialized in China. Although there are so many studies in China researching the consumers’ awareness and attitude toward genetically modified foods. But there is still a lack of studies in China researching the particular factors that influence customers’ purchase intention of genetically modified foods. This paper tries to investigate how the factors such as consumers’ risk/benefit beliefs and knowledge related to genetically modified foods and attitude toward regulatory agency of genetically modified foods influence Chinese consumers’ purchase intention. Now, as most of the genetically modified foods are sold in the urban areas and the urban consumers are more familiar with genetically modified foods, so, the objective of this paper is to investigate how these factors influence urban Chinese consumers’ purchase intention toward genetically modified foods.
