Abstract
In this study, hydrogels composed of Polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP), herbal extracts and κ-carrageenan(κC) for acne therapy were prepared by 60Co γ-ray irradiation. Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) are anaerobic bacterium that causes inflammatory acne. P. acnes are gram-positive bacterium that colonizes high sebum follicles, and play a substantial role in the process of inflammation and the formation of comedones by stimulating monocytes to secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-8 and IL-1β. To find a novel mediation for the inflammation of P. acnes, we confirmed the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of several herbal extracts, Phellodendron amurense Rupr., Paeonia lactiflora Pallas., Houttuynia cordata Thumb., Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.,against P. acnes. The results show significant anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. So we prepared PVP/κC hydrogel with herbal extracts against P. acnes by gamma radiation with 60Co γ source at room temperature. The properties of the prepared PVP/κC hydrogel, such as the gel content, swelling behavior, gel strength were investigated. The gel content and gel strength increased as the concentration of the PVP increased. But the swelling ratio decreased with increasing the content of PVP.
