Abstract
This study is to find out the current trend and the factors affecting the suicidal thought from the year of 1998 to 2008 in Korean elders. This study used the raw data from the first to the fourth National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). The subjects were 65 years old and older(3,329 in first , 3301 in second, 3730 in third and 1,728 in fourth period). We used chi-square and t-test analysis for the comparison of the difference of the affecting factors to the suicidal thoughts and logisitic regression analysis for the risk degree of suicidal thoughts. The results are as follows. The almost all demographic factors were the affecting factors to the suicidal thoughts excepting the variable of age in all period. In the factors of life of quality, there were no statistical association in the first period but in the third and fourth period all the factor affected the suicidal thoughts. In the health behaviors related factors, the drinking and smoking variables were not significant in all periods, the training variable was significant in the first period but not in the fourth period, and the variables of subjective healthy status, stress, and depression were the high risk factors to the suicidal thoughts. The odds ratios of the factors affecting the suicidal thoughts were high in the female, lower education, lower income, non-occupation, solo housing, lower subjective healthy status, non-training, high lever stress and depression but the drinking and smoking variables were not significant.
