전문가에 의한 구강 내 칫솔질 교육법이 치주염 환자의 치태조절에 미치는 영향

Abstract

Objectives: Efficient removal of dental plaque or biofilm that causes periodontal disease is very important in the treatment of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. The most effective method of plaque removal is a mechanical removal by tooth brushing. The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate the effect of a professional intraoral tooth brushing instruction technique compared with a conventional tooth brushing instruction technique in patients with periodontitis. Methods: One hundred sixteen patients were enrolled in this study. At the first visit, the patients were questioned about brushing time and frequency. Before scaling, the plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and modified plaque score (MPS) were assessed. Patients were randomly assigned either an experimental group (n=60) or a control group (n=56). At the second visit, after recording clinical parameters including MPS, the experimental group received a professional intraoral tooth brushing instruction and a conventional tooth brushing instruction was used for the control group. After root planing, MPS as well as clinical parameters were evaluated. Results: In the present study, the mean values of the MPS, PI and GI were improved in both groups compared with those of baseline. There were no significant differences in GI scores between two groups (P > 0.05). However, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in MPS compared with the control group at 6 weeks (P = 0.029). Conclusions: Professional intraoral tooth brushing instruction shows a significant reduction in the MPS. Therefore, it is suggested that a more effective treatment and prevention of periodontitis and peri-implantitis can be performed by using this technique.
