dc.description.abstractDepression is accompanied by activation of the inflammatory response system. Inflammatory cytokines and increased damage by oxidative stress were associated with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), and epidemiologic studies show that a low n-3 PUFA is associated with higher prevalence rates of depression. We evaluated the hypothesis that erythrocyte n-3 PUFAs were inversely associated with biomarkers for inflammation and oxidative stress in Korean with and without depression. Eighty cases were diagnosed with Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale Korea version (CES-D-K) scores ≥25 and confirmed by a psychiatrist, and eighty age- and sex-matched healthy controls without histories of depression were participated in the study. Linear regression analysis showed that CES-D-K scores, the number of depressed patients, levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -α were significantly and negatively associated with Omega-3 Index (erythrocyte levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) after adjusting for confounding factors. Levels of iNOS, superoxide dismutase, interferon (IFN) -γ, and nitrotyrosine were significantly higher in depressed patients than healthy controls. In addition, concentration of iNOS, TNF- α, TBARS and nitrotyrosine were negatively associated with erythrocyte levels of n-3 PUFAs and saturated fatty acids, but positively with erythrocytes levels of n-6 PUFAs and trans fatty acids. In conclusion, erythrocyte levels of Omega-3 index and n-3 PUFAs were inversely associated with the inflammatory cytokines and oxidative biomarkers in Korean with and without depression.-
